I’m making this again today for a family picnic – so I decided to repost the recipe in case you missed it! It’s sooooo good – everyone will be asking for the recipe! Enjoy and Happy Friday!
I had such a craving for cake today…as if all the easter candy from 5 kids in my home weren’t enough! This recipe is a family favorite. In fact, my son loves it so much he has requested it as his birthday cake every year since he turned 2. It’s so easy to throw together – no special mixing skills required! The best part is the frosting. When you pour it over the hot cake, it soaks in and creates a fudge like topping. SO GOOD!
Texas Sheet Cake
2 cups sugar
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup water
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 stick butter
1/2 cup cocoa powder, unsweetened
2 large eggs
1/2 cup vanilla yogurt
1 teaspoon vanilla
Combine the sugar, flour, baking soda and salt in a large bowl. In a saucepan, combine water, oil, butter and cocoa. Bring to a boil, constantly stirring. Pour over sugar and flour mixture. Add the remaining ingredients and mix until smooth. Pour into a lightly greased 9 x 13 inch pan and bake in a preheated 375 degree oven for 20 – 25 minutes. Let cool slightly and pour frosting (see below) over top of warm cake. Let cool and enjoy!
Frosting
3/4 cup cocoa powder, unsweetened
6 tablespoons butter
pinch salt
1/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 cups confectioners sugar, sifted (more or less to taste)
In a medium saucepan, heat the butter and milk until the butter is melted. Add in the cocoa and stir to combine. Remove from heat and add the vanilla. Gradually add in the confectioner’s sugar and beat until smooth. Use immediately.
Do you have a favorite cake recipe that you crave? I’d love to hear from you!
This looks awesome. I hadn’t thought of using yogurt in cake before but I bet it’s delicious. I can’t wait to try it! Thanks for sharing!
It makes a really moist cake – I highly recommend it!
When will it be ready? Yogurt works great in lots of recipes. I use it in all my mayo things and folks rave about my potato salad, etc.
🙂 Already done! I love using yogurt – it’s so versatile!
Looks yummy!!!
Very – totally craveable!
Do you have a low calorie version? :), on second thought, never mind, that would take all the fun out of eating it! Great looking cake!
Your so right! 🙂
It does look super good!
Thanks! 🙂
Oh, yum!!! I think I have all the ingredients!!! 😀
If you make it, I’d love to hear what you think about the recipe!
I will tell you. I’m hoping to have time tomorrow to bake. Seems like the weekends get away from me now, just like the rest of the week!!! 🙂 I was thinking it would be nice for a 4th of July BBQ too. My family is nuts for chocolate.
You know, I make this almost every summer holiday…mainly because it’s so easy, and everybody loves it!
Your recipes are always absolutely great, and your photos too. I often pop in and check them out. I have nominated you for the Versatile Blogger award, because I think you are! Jill x
Thank you so very much! I really appreciate the kind words and the nomination! 🙂
This looks amazing!! I’ve never used yoghurt in cake but I have a recipe involving sour cream, which I guess has a similar purpose.
It’s very similar! In fact, I often substitute one for the other when baking depending on which I have on hand!
Fantastic recipe and being added to the “must make soon” pile…
🙂 This is a favorite in my house, requested all the time! If you love chocolate, this cake is for you!
Looks delicious and decadent!
It is…one of the best cakes I’ve ever had!
Looks perfect for a picnic. Bookmarking!
Yes it is! It travels well.
Texas Sheet Cake will be the death of me. !!! I love this dessert so much. Thanks for posting it, now I am craving chocolate.
It is of me for sure – I think it might be the perfect food!
