3 Ingredient Chocolate Cake In A Mug

3 Ingredient Chocolate Cake In A Mug

That’s not a typo – it’s true.  With three ingredients (plus a topping of your choice) you can have a rich chocolate cake – in only 1 minute! If you’ve ever had a chocolate craving but didn’t have the time or will to bake – this is for you.  I topped mine with buttercream frosting (leftover from a cake I made) – but you can use chocolate chips, whipped cream, ice cream, hot fudge, caramel sauce…you get the idea!

The cake definitely needs a topping, otherwise it dries out rather quickly.  But for 3 ingredients and 1 minute of your time – how can you go wrong?!

3 Ingredient Chocolate Cake In A Mug

1 egg

1/4 cup powdered sugar

1 – 2 tablespoons cocoa powder (I used 1 1/2 tablespoons – it depends on how chocolatey you like things!)

Break egg into a coffee mug and add remaining ingredients.  Beat well – you want to make sure the cocoa is completely mixed it).  Microwave for 50 – 60 seconds until just puffed.  The cake will fall as you remove it from the microwave.  Top immediately with desired toppings.  Enjoy!

My kids really enjoyed this – they had a blast trying new flavors for the topping – one even melted peanut butter and marshmallows for the top!

Do you have a favorite dessert in a mug recipe?  I’d love to hear from you!

  1. This recipe is a keeper for a quick chocolate fix. I’ve never tried any of these recipes in a mug. Have you tried this with anything other than chocolate? ❤

    • No but am very interested in doing peanut butter and also maybe strawberry and also a spice of some kind. Next time I make this I want to top it with caramel sauce and whipped cream….yum!

  2. The recipe we like to go with around here is 2 T sugar, 2 T flour, 1 T cocoa powder, 1.5 T oil, 1.5 T milk (or milk powder mixed w/ water), and a tiny pinch of salt (the salt’s an absolute MUST). I like to nuke it for about 40 seconds for a fudgy texture. This is actually half of what original recipe called for, but I find that it’s the perfect amount to satisfy a sweet tooth – we just use really small cups. Favorite “stir-ins” before nuking include a small spoonful of peanut butter, a small handful of shredded coconut, or a tiny pinch of instant coffee powder. Yum yum! 😀

  3. This is so yummy. I discovered this type of recipe about 2 years ago when I was nursing my daughter. I could not eat anything with dairy or soy bc of her food allergies and this was one of the only desserts I could eat. It is delicious. In fact I still make it even though now I am eating dairy and soy. Thank you!

  5. Oh, this was so good! I put some Neufchatel cream cheese on top and after I ate a few bites, dropped a Dove chocolate in the middle until it melted. This recipe is delicious and turned out perfect!

  6. I cannot wait to try this. I wrote down the recipes. Sometimes, I just need something chocolate. Great idea. I recently got back from a dream Alaska vacation.
